Most people have had to deal with sweaty feet at one time or another. And while it can be inconvenient and annoying, it can also produce foot problems if the sweating is extreme or there’s an underlying cause. If you experience sweaty feet, Dr. Stuart Snyder and Dr. Sara Sharma of Maple Springs Foot Center, LLC want to share some information with you.

Causes of Sweaty Feet

Many people associate sweaty feet with just being active in the heat. While this is true, in some cases people experience problems with sweaty feet in the winter when wearing excessively warm boots that have insufficient ventilation, extremely thick socks, or a combination of both.

Also, some people just have sweaty feet due to overcharged sweat glands, also known as hyperhidrosis. This condition affects the feet and hands and can result in annoying problems associated with foot health

Complications Associated With Sweaty Feet

Sweaty feet are a factor in the growth of foot fungus, fungal toenails, and athlete’s foot. These disorders can cause discomfort, rash, and itching. They can also lead to further complications, such as foot pain, open sores, infection, and thickened toenails. It’s important to avoid bacteria and sweat buildup to stop these conditions from developing.

Treatments and Prevention of Sweaty Feet

Here are a few easy steps to treat sweaty feet at home:

  • Clean your feet every day with an antifungal soap to eliminate any excess sweat and fungus-causing bacteria.

  • Use antiperspirants and antifungal powder, particularly in the summer or when exercising. For those who are suffering from hyperhidrosis, over-the-counter antiperspirants are essential to stop sweating and maintain foot health.

  • Always wear good quality shoes and socks with proper ventilation to ensure that your feet can breathe and cool down!
